Tunisian-Algerian working session: agreement on demarcation of sea borders signed

TUNIS, Dec. 3, 2009 (TAP) - A Tunisian-Algerian working session was held, on Wednesday in Tunis, under the co- chairmanship of Foreign Affairs Minister Abdelwaheb Abdallah and his Algerian counterpart Mourad Medelci. During the session, a bilateral convention on demarcation of sea borders between Tunisia and Algeria was initialed. Mr. Abdelwaheb Abdallah said the signing of this convention translates the close ties binding Tunisia and Algeria and the significant progress made by Tunisian-Algerian relations in different areas, thanks to the political will driving the two countries' leaders, President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali and President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Having expressed the wish to see these relations further strengthened and reach highest levels, the minister praised the development of bilateral relations. These relations, he added, usher, thanks to the convention on demarcation of sea borders, in a new stage which will certainly impact on boosting and speeding up bilateral economic exchanges, as well as the Maghreb building process. For his part, Mr. Mourad Medelci reiterated the congratulations of the Algerian Republic to President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali on his victory at the October 25, 2009 elections, praising the gains made by Tunisia in different areas, under the wise leadership of President Ben Ali. He pointed out that the signing of the convention on sea borders reflects the close ties of confidence between Tunisia and Algeria, stressing the positive impact of this convention on the development of bilateral and Maghreb relations. Earlier, Messrs. Abdelwaheb Abdallah and his Algerian counterpart had a talk which reviewed the various aspects of bilateral co-operation and prospects for developing it. The two sides expressed satisfaction at the dynamics experienced by bilateral co-operation which is reflected in the exchange of visits between the two countries' officials and the strides made on the way of strengthening Tunisian- Algerian relations. The talk also allowed to reassert the will to finetune preparations for the high-level meeting due early next year. It also focused on several issues of mutual interest related to the Maghreb building process, the Euro- Mediterranean relations and Arab joint action, as well as on ways to support the just Palestinian cause. On all these issues, the two sides have similar views.
